Letter to Standing Together

Glossop Labour Club Statement of Solidarity with Standing Together on Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January 2026
On January 27th we commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day as an essential act of remembrance for the six million Jews murdered, and all the other victims of Nazi persecution. We also remember subsequent genocides in places like Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur, serving as a universal call against hatred and discrimination. HMD serves to remind us how easily hatred can be engendered by the powerful for their own ends, and how that hatred can then justify obscene acts of violence to genocidal ends.
Israel’s retaliation in Gaza to the horrific attacks by Hamas on 7th October 2023 has been a demonstration of how embedded hatred can lead to unjustifiable levels of violence against an entire population. Israeli forces have killed more than 70,000 Palestinians, systematically destroyed hospitals and schools, and targeted journalists and doctors.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2026, 'Bridging Generations', is a call-to-action. A reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn't end with the survivors - it lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through all of us. In recognition of this we extend our solidarity to Standing Together, an Israeli grassroots organisation campaigning for peace and an end to the occupation, equal rights for all citizens, social justice, and environmental justice. Standing Together have put themselves on the frontline in protecting Palestinians against violence as well being at the forefront of protesting the actions of Netanyahu’s government.
Here at Glossop Labour Club, we recognise your personal bravery in facing up to extremism and the price this has probably had for many of you.
Many members of GLC are involved with local campaigns to end Israel’s genocidal war and pressurise our government to acknowledge Israel’s actions as war crimes. Mostly however we feel helpless as we watch our government continue to sell arms to Israel and refuse to condemn the systematic destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure and indiscriminate murder of women and children as genocide.
As a Jewish and Arab organisation, you are a tiny flickering light in the current darkness. We thank you for this.
Glossop Labour Club is an independent socialist club founded in 1906.
